Knights and Dames of the Collar
The Collar is conferred on the most emminent persons, ecclesiastics or lay members, and to others in the most exceptional cases.
Attire
At ceremonial events of the Order, members wear liturgical attire. For Knights this consists of a white mantel or cloak bearing a large red Cross of Jerusalem, a black beret, insignia of the knight's rank, and white gloves. For Dames, liturgical attire consists of a black cape bearing a large red Cross of Jerusalem, insignia of the Dame's rank, a mantilla and gloves. Priests and bishops wear a mozetta of white bearing a large red Cross of Jerusalem on the left shoulder around which is suspended the insignia of the Priest Knight's or Bishop's rank.
BECOMING A KNIGHT OR DAME
Membership in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem is by invitation only. Nomination is reserved solely for practicing Catholics who have shown great devotion to the Church and who desire to progress in their spirituality and personal sanctification through participation and involvement with a religious community of ancient origins and world-wide dimensions. Our members are united in spirituality and share in certain spiritual and charitable works. Only members of the Order may nominate an individual to become a Knight or Dame.
Membership in the Order constitutes belonging to an ecclesiastical order of the Holy See. The Order is a pontifical knighthood and one of the oldest, internationally recognized Orders of Chivalry in the world. Its origins date back nearly a thousand years to the time of the First Crusade. It is the highest Papal honor which can be conferred on clergy and laity alike. Being a Knight or Dame means making a life-time commitment to be a witness to the faith, to the practice of Christian life, and to carry forward charitable works for the spiritual and material support of the suffering Christian communities of the Holy Land.
Becoming a member also involves actively participating in the life of the local diocese, both in spiritual and liturgical practices and in supporting the ministry and works of the Bishop and clergy. Once invested into the Order, all Knights and Dames are obligated to participate in this life by attending the episcopal liturgies to which the Bishop has invited us, as well as attending the Lieutenancy's annual investitures and in regular participation in the section's own liturgical activities as much as one is able.
